Frito Lay Celebrates "Greening"

The heightened awareness around the world as we all work towards preserving the earth, is inspiring.  I've always been a firm believer, one person at a time can make a change.  Their are an abundance of new and upcoming green and organic companies, but what about the companies that have been around for generations. You like to think they are also on a journey to gradually make changes to operate in a more eco-friendly fashion!

Recently, I became aware of some big changes Frito Lay is making in their conservation effort!   Including the celebration of the "Greening" of their manufacturing plant in Casa Grande, Arizona!

Frito Lay's Casa Grande employes 350+ people and produces approximately 100 million snacks per year!!  October 2009, Casa Grande became the  1st snack food facility to become certified LEED 2.0 Existing Building Gold.  This was a first for Frito Lay and the state of Arizona, and the 1st in the entire USA!

Casa Grande is the perfect location to run on renewable energy sources!  Operating with renewable electric, steam, and water.  Food waste is converted to cattle feed.  As part of the "Near Net Zero" effort nearly everything is recycled or reused in some way. Through this program, Casa Grande has been able to send less than 1% of overall waste to the landfill.  Casa Grande has reduced it's greenhouse gases by 50% and reduced the use of natural gas by 80%.  So inspiring, now if we can get other companies to follow Frito Lay's "Near Net Zero" effort.

I would love to visit Frito-Lay's Casa Grande manufacturing facility, to see all of this in progress!! Until then, I think I'll go fix myself a snack, Tostitos tortilla chips and salsa, and dream about it!
